Scipio and Jugurtha enter. Scipio.--This very difficult and heavy charge The Roman Senate has devolved on me, --So much fatigues, o'erweighs, and presses me, That it unhinges quite my diligence. War in its course so strange and yet so wide, And which so many Roman lives has cost; Will no one hesitate to suspend its course, K Or no one dare its fury to renew? Jugurtlia.--Who, Scipio? who the fortune entertains, And valour yet unseen, which in thee lives? For in it and in thee securely dwells The victory and triumph in these wars. Scipio.--Force regulated with discretion Levels the loftiest mountains to their base, And the ferocious strength of the mad hand Distorted renders what was level before. Nothing presents this mischief to repress. The fury of the present armament Of fame and trophies quite oblivious Prostrate lies sunken in a burning lust This only I suggest, earnestly wish, With our people a new treaty to make, That first restoring what is in amity, I quickly shall our enemy subdue. Marius. Caius Marius enters. Caius Marius.--Sir. Scipio.--Procure a notice to be given To all the soldiers at this very time, That no impediment be interposed, And that in the same spot they all appear, Because I would a brief harangue or word, Proffer to them all. Caius Marius.--I'll do it straight. Scipio.--Proceed, for it is good they all should know My new contrivances, and their old usage. Caius Marius exit. Jugurtha.--l can aver, my lord, no soldier exists Who does not jointly love and fear thee too; And for this thy valour extreme in truth From the Antartic to Calisto spreads. Each soldier...
